Vice Alternatives

Tired of Vice Magazine incessant ragging on everything? Yeah, me too.

coolehmag First up is Cool’eh. A Mag that is wanting on the Vice bandwagon in a bad way. Unfortunately the writing is sub-sub-par, artists are like hookers? Thats no gag, I think Shakespeare did that bit. The interviews are pretty vanilla, and the reviews are awful. Excerpt from the Jigga Jones DVD review: “From the opening shot is of a pile of dog-shit swarming with flies, I knew this was going to be hilarious” What is this? MTV and poor grammar? Gimme a break of that Kit-Kat bar. I’ve seen some Jigga Jones and that is piss poor product being peddled. The diamond in the rough of Cool’eh or at least their art issue, is they have minimal ads, and big full page prints of the artist’s works. This pretty much makes me overlook all the other garbage in here.

frankmag.jpg Next is Frank, from Seattle. Wow. Frank is small, nifty, it is kinda hard to read. The writing in this mag is not only readable but enjoyable, the articles are more interesting, I mean tell me how you can go wrong with this line up: Sub-Pop archives, Sir Mix-A-Lot’s favourite restaurants, tuberculosis ward observations, Ralph Steadman-esque fonts, photos of run down motels! The list goes on! I’m not making this up! I guess Frank’s only downsides is it is a tad heavy on ads, but I can live with that. Lord knows we are all just mice fiendin’ for a bit of that cheesy cheese whiz.

So conclusion:
Frank > Vice > Cosmo > Cool’eh (if you want some wallpaper)

Side note: Your a man now… don’t tear pages out of magazines and put them on your walls.
